No. 05 · letter five

The whole number.

On the rep that turns a stack of statements into one figure you can say out loud.

By now you have opened one statement. You have asked one question about it. Small acts. They were supposed to be.

Here is the next one, and it is bigger. Stop looking at your money one account at a time. Add it up. All of it. The number.

Most women I have known can tell you numbers that belong to other people without pausing. The company's revenue. The team's target. The rate a neighbor bragged about. Then you ask a simpler one. What do you have. Not roughly. Not "we're fine." The figure. And the room goes quiet.

Not because the number is frightening. Because it has never lived in one place. It was spread across a statement here, an account there, a plan from an old job, a thing your spouse handles, a thing the firm handles. Never gathered. Never yours in a single line. And a number you have never gathered is a number someone else has been holding for you.

So gather it.

This week, one rep. Put every account in one place. Checking. Savings. Retirement, current and old. Brokerage. The one you forgot. What you owe comes too. Card, mortgage, loan, line. Write them in a single column and do the subtraction. What you have, minus what you owe. The figure at the bottom is your number.

It will take an afternoon, not a mindset. And when it is done you will have something most people go their whole lives without. Not more money. A true number. One you found yourself, that no one handed you, that you can say out loud without reaching for a login.

That is the shift. You stop being briefed on your own life and start holding it. The statement was one page. The question was one sentence. This is the whole picture in a single line, and it is yours.

Say it out loud, once, alone. Then keep it somewhere only you can see. We are going to use it.

Quietly, Aleesha
